The Bicycle
Nicholas Connolly Pastor of First and Grace United Methodist Churches The Twelfth of Thirteen Sundays in Kingdomtide November 15, 2009 The names of the Sundays are taken from The Bible Through the Seasons: A Three-Year Journey with the Bible
Scripture: 1 Daniel 12:1-3 Mark 13:1-12
Our granddaughter's first bicycle and the joy of her learning so quickly, suggests a new image for one of Nick's favorite themes: the Here and Now. It is difficult to hover over the Now by balancing while a bike is still. Once stated into motion, however, the balance on a bike is easy to maintain.
The Now is not a static moment frozen in time, but rather moves gently through time from the past into the future. The disciples leave their "Here and Now" quiet time with Jesus on the Mount of Olives, with questions about whether the beauty of the Temple will last for a long time. While Jesus tells about the destruction of the Temple, the narrative is a flashback, since the devastation of the Temple occurred in 70 AD, prior to the writing of the Gospel of Mark.
Nick develops the theme of the Spirit being with us as our journey in life moves from Here and Now to There and Then.
