Becoming Sacred Food
Nicholas Connolly Pastor of First and Grace United Methodist Churches August 16, 2009 The Twelfth of Thirteen Sundays in Pentecost The names of the Sundays are taken from The Bible Through the Seasons: A Three-Year Journey with the Bible
Scripture: John 6:51-58
Religious leaders are shocked by the implications of eating Jesus' flesh and blood. For us, "No problem: Jesus is speaking about Holy Communion." Yet there can be a problem for us if we see Holy Communion as only the occasional ritural completing of doing what Jesus' enjoined upon us, "Do this in memory of Me." The purpose of Holy Communion is for us to be totally tranformed into the sacred food we eat: the body of Christ dwelling within us.
