A Father's Measure
Pastor Nick Connolly Grace United Methodist Church
The Fourth of Thirteen Sundays in Pentecost – June 21, 2009 Scripture: Matthew 5:43-48
The names of the Sundays are taken from The Bible Through the Seasons: A Three-Year Journey with the Bible.
"Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect." This is the measure of a father's character on this Father's Day. But wait! The word "perfect" is not what you think it means. Rather than moral perfection, the world means "wholeness" and "integrity."
What makes God the measure for fathers are two characteristics lifted in the. These are "wholeness" in the sense of space offered to each of us that we might simply be; then there is "compassion," the word that Luke uses instead of Matthew's "perfect."
Nick shares how the clock on his father's bureau bears witness to these two criteria as measures for a father. As a reminder, each father received a tape measure!
