Beyond Babel
Pastor Nick Connolly Grace United Methodist Church
Pentecost Sunday – May 31, 2009
Scripture: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15
Trivial Pursuit question: "In what chapter of Genesis does the story of the Tower of Babel take place?" Answer: "Chapter 11!" Yes, that's when all the effort of the human family to reach heaven were doomed to failure. Humanity went backrupt.
Unlike the Home Depot slogan, "You can do it—we can help," the way of grace is, "God can do it—you can help!"
The endless stream of language from the media has glutted us with tension, manipulation, as kingdoms of commerce try to build themselves. Confusion and language gridlock happens. What occurred at Pentecost is the reverse of confusion. The Spirit's coming brought such power and focus, not ony to the apostles, but to the listeners. Silence surrounded all their hearts so that the new converts could hear beyond words, the power of the Spirit that came upon them as well as the apostles.
May the power of the Spirit come upon us.
